KAMPALA, UGANDA — August 14, 2026 — The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Uganda will participate in the Government’s National Cleaning Days through organised community cleaning activities on Sundays, following an engagement between Uganda Union Mission leadership and Prime Minister Hon. Robinah Nabbanja.
The arrangement was reached after the Church presented a proposal to Government seeking a way for Adventists to support the national cleanliness initiative while maintaining their observance of the biblical Sabbath, which runs from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. The Church had expressed its full support for the National Cleaning Days but noted that the scheduled Saturday activities conflict with Sabbath observance.
The Uganda Union Mission delegation, led by Union President Pr. Samuel Kajoba, met with the Prime Minister to discuss the proposed arrangement. Following the engagement, Adventists will carry out cleaning activities in public places within their communities on Sundays, working together with local authorities.
Under the arrangement, Sabbath School and Lesson Study will begin from members’ homes on Saturday, while congregational worship will begin at 10:00 a.m. This will help minimise disruption while allowing members to maintain their Sabbath worship.
The Church’s proposed implementation provides for local churches to mobilise members and coordinate with district, city and municipal authorities to identify areas for cleaning. The activities are intended to demonstrate Christian citizenship, environmental stewardship and service to the community.
The Uganda Union Mission will provide overall coordination, while Conferences and Fields will work with local authorities to facilitate implementation across their territories.
